Air Stripper System and Enclosure
Minerva, Ohio
Fliteway designed, fabricated, and delivered a complete skid-mounted packed-tower air stripper system with a custom protective building enclosure, enabling year-round groundwater treatment at an industrial site in northeastern Ohio.
The Challenge
A global environmental consulting firm required a complete air stripper system for groundwater treatment at an industrial remediation site in Minerva, Ohio. The project demanded not only the treatment equipment itself, but also a purpose-built enclosure to house and protect the system for continuous, year-round operation in Ohio's climate — where winter temperatures regularly drop below freezing and summer conditions bring heat and humidity.
The scope was comprehensive: full engineering design, mechanical fabrication, electrical distribution, controls integration, HVAC for the enclosure, and coordination of all disciplines into a cohesive, turn-key package. The air stripper needed to efficiently remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from extracted groundwater to meet discharge limits, while the enclosure had to provide weather protection, adequate ventilation, heating for freeze protection, and safe personnel access for operations and maintenance.
The Solution
Fliteway delivered a turn-key solution encompassing the complete treatment system and its protective enclosure. The air stripper was a packed-tower design, sized for the site-specific groundwater flow rate and VOC concentrations. The tower was fabricated with corrosion-resistant materials and high-efficiency packing media to maximize mass transfer and VOC removal across the range of expected operating conditions.
The skid-mounted treatment system included the air stripper tower, blower, influent distribution system, sump and transfer pumps, process piping with isolation valves, and all associated instrumentation. Mounting everything on a structural steel skid allowed for factory assembly, piping, and testing before shipment to the Ohio site.
The custom building enclosure was designed around the treatment equipment, providing full weather protection while maintaining the access clearances needed for operations and maintenance. The enclosure included an HVAC system with unit heaters for freeze protection during winter operation, ventilation fans for summer heat management, interior lighting, and personnel access doors.
The electrical distribution system provided power to all treatment equipment, HVAC, lighting, and controls from a single point of connection. PLC-based controls automated the treatment process, including pump operation, blower control, level management, alarm annunciation, and safety interlocks.
Results
The complete air stripper system and enclosure were delivered as a turn-key package, ready for site installation and connection to the groundwater extraction system. The packed-tower air stripper achieved the required VOC removal efficiency to meet discharge limits, and the building enclosure provided reliable protection for continuous, year-round system operation.
Factory assembly and testing of the skid-mounted equipment reduced on-site construction time and ensured quality control. The integrated HVAC and controls systems maintained proper operating conditions regardless of external weather, and the PLC automation reduced operator intervention requirements while maintaining consistent treatment performance.
Technical Details
Packed-Tower Air Stripper
The packed-tower design uses counter-current air-to-water contact across high-surface-area packing media to transfer volatile organic compounds from the liquid phase to the gas phase. The tower height, diameter, and packing type were selected based on the specific VOC compounds and concentrations present in the site groundwater.
Process Piping & Instrumentation
Process piping was fabricated from corrosion-resistant materials appropriate for the groundwater chemistry. Instrumentation included flow meters, pressure gauges, level sensors, and temperature indicators at critical process points.
Building Enclosure & HVAC
The custom enclosure was designed to house the full treatment system while providing maintenance access, freeze protection, and ventilation. Unit heaters with thermostatic controls maintain interior temperatures above freezing during winter months.
Electrical & PLC Controls
The electrical distribution system provided a centralized power feed with individual circuit protection for each piece of equipment. PLC controls managed the treatment process including pump sequencing, blower operation, level control, and alarm management.
